The Two Pātimokkha Recitations
VINAYA TRADITION · volume 1 of 10
The two Pātimokkha recitations — one for monks, one for nuns — as they stand at the head of the Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī in the Burmese edition. They are canonical text and are not translated in this programme. The commentary that follows them in the same source file is printed as its own volume in the Aṭṭhakathā layer.
The recitation text has its own line of descent, and this commentary is the proof of it. The Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī comments on an introduction that the Suttavibhaṅga's version of the same rules does not carry, which “guarantees a tradition of this text independent from the Suttavibhaṅga” (Hinüber 1996, p. 110, §222). The rules were being recited and copied in their own right, not only inside the Vinaya.
Canonical text (mūla), not translated in this programme. The Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī that follows it in the same file is Aṭṭhakathā volume 48.
How it ends
Bhikkhunipātimokkhaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ.
