Kaṅkhāvitaraṇīpurāṇa-ṭīkā
Old and New, on the Pātimokkha
VINAYA TRADITION · volume 6 of 10
Both subcommentaries on the Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī, bound as one volume: the older one (CST4 paragraphs 1–669), and after it the Vinayatthamañjūsā (670–2517), which Sāriputta's pupil Buddhanāga later wrote on the same text. The older is called porāṇa, “old”, for one reason only: to keep it apart from the newer. The colophon that closes the volume is the Vinayatthamañjūsā's, not the old subcommentary's.
The old subcommentary is anonymous, and its title is a guess. The very brief introduction may be giving Līnapadavikāsaka as the name of the work, or may not.
Its date can only be expressed as later than someone else's. It quotes Vajirabuddhi extensively, so it is later than he is — and Vajirabuddhi himself is only bracketed at 450–600 CE, so no year can be put to this book at all. It also draws on the Porāṇaganthipada, the Ganthipada and the Anuganthipada, and once it preserves an opinion of the Thera Upatissa in a slightly fuller form than Vajirabuddhi's version of the same quotation — which is the kind of detail that makes a derivative book worth keeping.
The second book is signed and dated by its reign. Buddhanāga names himself in his closing verses — So buddhanāgattherohaṃ — as the pupil of the Mahāthera and Mahāsāmi Sāriputta, writing at the request of the Thera Sumedha in a pariveṇa at Polonnaruva, and he opens that closing section with praise of Parakkamabāhu I (Hinüber 1996, p. 174, §378). That puts the Vinayatthamañjūsā in Sāriputta's generation, under the king who reigned 1153–1186 CE (Hinüber 1996, p. 172, §372).
The volume holds two works: the anonymous Kaṅkhāvitaraṇī-purāṇaṭīkā (CST4 paragraphs 1–669) and Buddhanāga's Vinayatthamañjūsā (670–2517). Corrected 7 October 2026: the closing colophon and the second work had been treated as the first's, and the pin p. 173 for the old subcommentary is pp. 173–174 (its paragraph is on p. 174).
