The New Subcommentary on the Dīgha

SUTTA TRADITION · volume 2 of 5

The second volume of the “new” subcommentary on the Sīlakkhandhavagga, completing the work.

Ñāṇābhivaṃsa wrote it in about 1800 CE, in Burma, after he had become Saṅgharāja — his full style is Ñāṇābhivaṃsa Dhammasenāpati Dhammarājādhirājaguru. The book calls itself Sādhuvilāsinī, in the opening verses and again in a long closing colophon that turns aside to describe the monasteries at Amarapura built by the city's founder, King Bodawpaya (1782–1819 CE) — a subcommentary doubling as a record of its own moment.

The Sāsanavaṃsa credits the same author with more: an atthayojanā on the Jātaka, which appears to be an explanation written in Burmese rather than Pali, and a lost commentary on the Nettippakaraṇa called Peṭakālaṅkāra.

This volume's colophon names both title and author outright: Iti dīghanikāyaṭṭhakathāya sīlakkhandhavaggasaṃvaṇṇanāya Sādhuvilāsinī nāma abhinavaṭīkā samattā — thus the new subcommentary named Sādhuvilāsinī on the exposition of the Sīlakkhandhavagga in the commentary on the Dīghanikāya is completed — the author given as ñāṇābhivaṃsadhammasenāpatināmatherena.
