Sāratthadīpanī

VINAYA PIṬAKA · Pācittiya–Parivāra · volume 3 of 3

The Sāratthadīpanī on the Samantapāsādikā, third and last of its three parts, and it covers everything that remains: the monks' rules from the Pācittiya on (CST4 paragraphs 4–578), the whole Bhikkhunīvibhaṅga (579–716), the Mahāvagga (717–1752), the Cūḷavagga (1753–2153) and the Parivāra (2154–2401), closing Sāratthadīpanī nāma vinayaṭīkā niṭṭhitā.

Sāriputta is the first author in this collection who can be dated to a reign rather than to a bracket. He worked in Ceylon under Parakkamabāhu I — 1153–1186 CE — in a building the king had raised for him inside the Jetavana monastery, and his subcommentaries open by naming that king and his reunification of the Saṅgha. His teacher was the Anuthera Sumedha.

This is the Vinaya side of his work, and the layer it belongs to is exact: Buddhaghosa's Samantapāsādikā explains the Vinaya, and the Sāratthadīpanī explains the Samantapāsādikā.

The subcommentary on the Samantapāsādikā. The author gives its full title as Līnasāratthadīpanī. Sāriputta's authorship is confirmed both by the nigamana and by his own pupil, who names him as his teacher in the Vinayavinicchaya subcommentary (Hinüber 1996, p. 172, §373). The volume runs from the Pācittiya to the end of the Parivāra (CST4 paragraphs 4–2401). Corrected 7 October 2026: the Background had named the Pācittiyakaṇḍa alone.

How it ends
